Ocular tumors and other neoplasms refer to abnormal growths that can occur in or around the eye, which can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Symptoms
Common symptoms include:
Visible Mass or Lump
Eye Pain
Bulging of the Eye (Proptosis)
Vision Changes
Redness
Irritation or Swelling
Double Vision
Loss of Vision
Types and Treatments
Benign Tumors: Such as hemangiomas, which are non-cancerous growths of blood vessels. Treatment: Observation, surgical removal if causing symptoms, or laser therapy.
Malignant Tumors: Including ocular melanoma (cancer of the eye’s pigment cells) and retinoblastoma (eye cancer in children). Treatment: ○ Ocular Melanoma: Radiation therapy, surgical removal, laser therapy, or chemotherapy. ○ Retinoblastoma: Chemotherapy, radiation, laser therapy, cryotherapy, or enucleation (removal of the eye) in severe cases.
Orbital Tumors: Tumors that occur in the eye socket. Treatment: Surgical removal, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy depending on the type and location.
Conjunctival Tumors: Tumors on the surface of the eye, such as squamous cell carcinoma. Treatment: Surgical removal, cryotherapy, topical chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.
